Behind the Blog - 3++ is the new Black

In the Grim Dark Future, there is war, and blogging about said war. Also blogging about anything and everything else going on. Blogging is a thankless job most times, and while our online community is pretty awesome in general as we celebrate all things Grim Dark, hobby, and miniature related. Seldom is the curtain pulled back to shine a light behind the scenes. The people who devote themselves to the dark god's of blogging work away frantically keeping the posts flowing. So in this series we will be speaking to some of our communities most dedicated. Getting a small glimpse into the minds of our fellow bloggers, and pillars of our online world. To get this glimpse a short series of questions went out into the warp, and these are the bloggers who responded.

Vendetta Progress - weathering continues

Another quick post I am throwing up as I work through my back log of content that I have been meaning to get up on the site. . .Just some quick snaps further along on the Vendetta.

As you can see the progress is starting to come together. I still have to weather the other side of the plane and the underside. Then there is detail work, the cockpit, and some finishing touches, so far from done. However it's always nice to show some progress on these larger models to hopefully inspire some of you, and to keep me motivated at the same time. =)

Thoughts and Feedback are welcome.

Space Hulk for IPad

So on the 5th I think they released Space Hulk for the Ipad and possibly other IOS devices. I have been looking for a new thing to do on my ipad so I scooped it up. I want you to take note that I have never played the board game and only read about the game on steam.

Vendetta Wings

Quick snap, I haven't posted this yet, but I have been working on a Vendetta recently. Figured I should start showing some progress to show the random jumping around I tend to do painting project to to project and also to help keep me motivated. The model is far from done but you can see the weathering result I am going for. I am working on the main body section now, so hopefully some more progress shots soon. The over all look is really coming together and I think it will look great once the main plane is close to done. The weathering pigments are really great for achieving so many different looks.

Being a tourney player more than a hobby player as my roots, I tend to only focus on units I need for a list or upcoming list I want to run. I have been setting on this model for some time without any real motivation to paint it since I haven't been wanting to play the IG allies I started collecting. Sadly unless I get inspired to do a new paint scheme like this, I tend to only paint units I need to for some upcoming event or small projects. Sometimes I just want to paint a cool model because of a idea I have for a modification or something. In this case I finally decided the type of paint scheme I wanted my IG vehicles to have.

Digital Bah Humbug

You know I may be mistaken but I can remember when people would complain all the time that GW was taking forever to release new rules for anything and how frustrated people got because Codex A needed an update more than Codex B. How many of my hardcore DE players remember the gap between books they lived through? Fast forward and we are in a place that no one saw coming. The overlords at GW have been releasing content like a zombie horde that the community is now fighting to hold back. The rules are fluid and the Meta is fluid.

Now I don’t know if people like to complain in general? I mean maybe it’s part of the hobby to complain about the hobby? I know a few people that if they aren't complaining about something they just aren't happy it seems.  People have a knee jerk reaction and get all “Friends of Humanity” before giving things a chance I feel, or stepping back to try out something. (Obscure X-men reference my bad) When 6th came out I know tons of people that walked away without even playing a handful of games because it’s horrible.. Random Objectives, with random terrain rolls, random charge length, random power tables, and allies with flyers.. Clearly it must be garbage I don’t need to actually play. 6th isn't perfect by any means but it’s not horrible either. Just seems randomly off balance like the editions before it to me but I haven’t been playing as long as some people.

I think the Digital rules are a great way to more quickly expand the game. I haven’t seen anything broken more than an actual codex at this point. The things that make the game one sided at this point are units that can get a reroll on a 2++, and wave serpents. These things didn't come from supplements or datasheets, or digital rules. The power Tau, Eldar, and Deamon table domination currently is just from the standard rule books they gave them. The Digital stuff seems to be just more flavor and toys.

Fateweaver re-based

Hey guys just a quick update. I have done the first test base for changing up my Demon army as I gear up to change all the bases. I added the above base to Fateweaver and I am very pleased with how it turned out. The wasteland look really makes the model pop not to mention the detail in the base itself.  Just a quick snap since I didn't get to finish the other posts I had planned this week with all the holiday madness going on.

I have a product review on the set of bases I ordered to test this coming up, plus we have three more behind the blogs left. The last one is a awesome finale type article! I also have some updates on a vendetta I been working on as it nears completion. I hope everyone had a fantastic holiday.

Black Friday SALE at Emperor's CODEX!!!

I am not actually selling anything, but its all 50 percent off!! ACT NOW, no, wait in line so you can ACT LATER!!! But be first to do the acting!!! Yes it is that time of the year where people go all crazy and stand in long lines with zero (Yes Zero) roller coasters at the end. However normally we do this crazy thing, well wait... other people do this crazy thing to get mad deals on stuff they may or may not actually need. (I don't like waiting in lines.. I tend to shop online when I can. I like to consider it Deep Strike Shopping)

So who online is having a deal for the blackest of Friday's?

hmmmm let's see who is offering what I saw initially.

ForgeWorld - REALM OF BATTLE SPACE MARINE CASTELLUM STRONGHOLD

Forgeworld terrain incoming, I believe we have seen pictures of this thing in the past but now it's something you can put on your Christmas wish list.. This thing honestly looks like it could be a awesome Display board and when you put four of them together on the table it looks pretty sharp as you can see below.

So I painted a Fateweaver

So I have to say I have owned this model forever it feels like. I won him at a RTT well over a year ago and took him just because I didn't have one. Then he sat on my shelf plotting and doing whatever those models do while waiting to be painted in boxes keeping each other company in your hobby area. ( I like to think they tell each other ghost stories, GRIM Dark Ghost Stories)

I never really liked the FateCrusher army and felt the model was way over costed in that list so I instead ran heralds in 5th edition. I also was not inspired to paint the model, especially since I wasn't using it. Why did you get it then? Well because I am a demon player and I didn't have one yet lol It paid off since he is vastly more useful now as I already talked about briefly here

Anyway let's take a look at the finished model

Secret Weapon Miniatures Juweela Tiny Bricks! Yes Please!

So I have gotten a handful of items from Secret Weapon Miniatures for a few different projects I have planned. Whenever I order a third party item outside from the standard GW stuff I always enjoy plopping down a product review to give you guys an idea what your getting your hands on. I originally started writing this with all the items I ordered in the same article but it became a silly long post as I talked about each item so instead I have opted to do one product at a time, starting with these tiny bricks!

INSPIRE - Sheldon on Display

Do you watch the Big Bang Theory? Wait.. wait.. maybe I should ask who doesn't watch that show? Zab over at Almost Perftec (which is a great blog name but a nightmare to type due to muscle memory) Created this awesome gift for a friend. Which tells us that we all should be Zab's friend so we can get a cool gift perhaps? Well too bad I already consider myself a friend since I stalk his blog in my spare time so get in line!!

Zab does great stuff over there. I love to post things in the INSPIRE series that make me step back and want to try something and this is another fantastic example.

We learn that even if your not a fan of the t.v. series and can't really appreciate the awesome that this gift is, you should still take away the concept. As a hobbyist you could make someone a awesome gift tailored to them, not to mention look how far a great display set up can take even a single mini.  Now don't come back and complain when you give your significant other a awesome diorama of her shoe shopping, or cleaning the kitchen and sleep on the couch for weeks. I suggest diamonds or roses for that person in your life. (possibly you should buy a more comfortable couch as well) However I am sure there are others in your life you like to give gifts too from time to time. Friends, Parents, office co worker, cute neighbor perhaps?

Either way follow the link over there to see some of the process gone through to make this thing. Also you get to learn he works in t.v. in some regard so find his email and feel free to send him your audition tapes. Also Zab I'll make sure you have my address in time for Christmas buddy!

The Keeper of Secrets Aka Demon Prince tax

Yes the Keeper of Secrets, and I don't mean the nickname your family gave to your creepy uncle that no one would leave you alone with when you where growing up.. (Although he too might make Slaanesh proud) When the new Demon Rules dropped this guy become viable on the table top more so because he unlocked the Slaanesh version of DP's than his own ability. I tend to like being able to shoot with my princes and being able to also have fleet has been the difference between a win and a loss for me more than a handful of times. Now I don't mean to say that Slaanesh DP's are the end all and only viable option, Nurgle is very viable, as is going with the Lord of Change. It all depends on your local meta, and your personal play style is all. Not to mention the rest of your list where you want to spend points.

Keeping all that in mind I wanted to go the Slaanesh route. Now Forgeworld has a Fantastic model to use as the Keeper that I would love to own. However Forgeworld just isn't in my budget these days even with GW working so hard to bridge that price gap. What it meant was that I needed to actually take the metal model off the shelf and put it together. I have owned the model for sometime just never really did anything with it, more so because I don't really like the sculpt than anything else.

Let's take a look though at the result.

Updating Demons - The Fatman

Alright so in the background since the new Demon book has come out I have been updating my Demon army. Updating the models a bit for the new codex, as well as going back and finishing models now that I have learned a ton on the hobby side about painting and such. I have done a few models that I haven't had time to post just yet but bare with me as I try to catch up and get some pictures going of things I have done in the background.

One of the first models I went back to mess with was my Nurgle Soul Grinder aka The FATMAN as I call him. He is for the first time a complete model since I made him so long ago, which is a little sad when you consider how long it took me to go back and complete him. He was table top done for some time but I wanted to finish off his paint, tone him down, and give him a less cartoony look and more realistic color tone. Let's take a look.

Raging Hero's the mini company that is known for some pretty awesome sculpts. http://www.ragingheroes.com/ Did a Kickstarter not that long ago called the toughest girls of the galaxy. INSPIRE - Life after Death

It's no secret that I have been more and more focused on the hobby side then the competitive play side since 6th has come out.. Not that I don't enjoy playing or competing any longer, just the rest of the hobby as a whole has taken a hold of me.. I have been looking further and further outside of 40k as I learn things, and I am always glad I have... Check this thing out.

This thing is amazing looking and gives me tons of inspiration. Let's take a look at some more pictures.

Emperor's Codex goes Global

Just a quick note, as I tinker away with things in the background that I haven't been sharing public as often, I do still live, and have several things on the burner.. I wanted to do a quick post though to let you guys know that I have started to work with the 40KUK guys a bit. I'll be throwing a few guest articles up over the next couple months at 40kglobal, and depending on the process and things go perhaps I'll just become a regular writer over there..

Anyway my first article is up this weekend, we had a bit of a scheduling ordeal already in the background so my second article will be up rather quickly. I think sometime early next week instead of separated by a week or more time like authors on sites normally are.

Jump over and take a glance, and let me know what you think.. The format is a much shorter less in depth post structure than I am used too.. I can't really get into details as much as I would like but hey you take what opportunities you can right? I mean I don't have Kirby or Bols offering me blog time lol.  So I figure its always a plus to give back to the community someplace, and diversify my online friends I chat with about the hobby.

Double Foc love or hate it?

So in a odd twist of story line I was able to break away from the chains of the real world and sneak off to throw some dice last weekend. The event was at EGC down in Cincy which is a great store. If you are in the cincy Area I recommend stopping in to check it out. (Although if your in the Cincy area you have no shortage of places to buy and play)

The event was up to 22 players 2000 points and DFOC. This brought up several questions and group discussion among my fellow gamer's locally about Double Force Org.

The community speaks about 6th edition

So I wrote up a little article last week, not even so much of a article more of a quick rant. That's what personal blogs are for right? You post some random pictures, discuss game things you are thinking about, some random rants about things on your mind. I commented about how 6th had impacted a large brick of my playing circle and area's I have seen. The title really said it all, Is anyone still gaming? I was hearing several people who stopped, took a break, moved on, or just can't be bothered currently because of other things going on. What I got back from our online community is some feedback about things going on around them. I actually got lots more than I had expected in several forms. Facebook, comments, text msgs, and even a phone call and a few emails from people.

What did everyone have to say.. well a little bit of everything I will do my best to recap.

Saturday, June 29, 2013

Hello is anyone still gaming?

Crickets, can be heard in once packed gaming halls in my area. Perhaps that is a slight over statement. Let’s stick with what I have seen. These could be wrong, but the impression is that things have gone quiet. What do I mean by that.. Well..

Is it a new Digital Age?

I am sure you have seen the chatter about Digital Books and Digital Codex online. Is going Digital the way of the future? Don't go burning your books just yet though.

Tournament Painting - Simple Grass Basing

So often we tend to focus on the higher end skill set while we strive ever closer toward a Golden demon style of painting. However I want to introduce you to a term I use often in my circle of buddies. The word "Tournament Painting". While so many people love the hobby side, there is a large group that either cares more about the gaming side, or just isn't skilled at the hobby side to the point they strive for passable, non embarrassing, or more importantly decent soft score. Yes my tournament brothers and hobby handicapped homies, this article is for you!

I am going to show you a fast and super easy method to make simple bases. Perfect if you don't want to mess with the hobby side, but want something that looks solid, or pulls your force together. A process that you can do for a event your staying up late trying to get those three colors done on your army for. Also something you can do in bulk with a solid result. I have used this for smaller forces,  quick commissions, and have gotten several compliments on models done this way.

Adepticon 2013 - Team event pt 2

Alright welcome back to what will be our final Adepticon post as I finish up the coverage I planned on doing of the event. In our last post I ran down our lists quickly and talked about our mindset going in. so let's go ahead and throw up some pictures of the last two games of our day one.

Adepticon 2013 - 40k Team event pt 1

Welcome back to our show where Drkmorals talks about things at Adepticon for what seems like forever because he takes a ton of pictures. It's because one of my favorite things about this hobby is the visual nature of it. The models, and the fluff, with the work people have put into their armies. Playing a game with two fully painted armies is always a great experience! Large events like this really allow this type of gaming to shine. Anyway let's talk about the Team event, because that is how I spent my second day at Adepticon this year.

The Road to CAG-BASH: Part 7

...turning into the home stretch!

Day two of the CAG-Bash tournament.  I'm 3-0 going into today, and I feel much better after a good night of sleep.  Day 1 was a loooong day, and I basically just went home and crashed after it was over.

I feel good going into day 2.  I'm undefeated, but I did have a very tough game 2 against Tyranids.  I'm hoping I don't have to face any more of them, but it will come down to luck of the draw.  As it turns out, I end up against the Ultimate Spoiler Army for this game!

Adepticon 2013 Day One

I have posted the Crystal Brush information and uploaded all the team pictures from the Adepticon Event. I was hoping to catch some great armies from the normal events alas I wasn't able to do so. Partly because I had to balance picture taking while gathering information to share here with you our awesome readers and running around enjoying all that is Adepticon. Lantz has been doing a great day by day run down and I am now at the point where I will do my day by day run downs as well. So take a walk with me.

Adepticon 2013 - 40k Team army pictures pt 2

Welcome back as we continue to cover things that happened at Adepticon. Last time I realized that we had just too many pictures for one post so I split the team event into two posts. Let's kick it off with a look at the rest of the Team armies on display.

The Road to CAG-BASH: Part 6

...cruising to the end of a long first day while a black (k)night falls

Welcome back to another exciting battle report!  I hope your 40k projects are going as well as mine are: I'm currently 90% of the way finished building my Tau!  I spent a LOT of time this weekend magnetizing the crap out of my army.  I should be able to run my 3  Crisis suits in any possible configuration with all the magnetizing and bits I bought.  I even magnetized all my drones!

But, back to CAG-Bash.  To recap: I'm up 2-0 in the tournament so far.  My first game against Daemons went well, but I barely squeaked out a win against Tyranids in the second round.  This will be my third battle for the day...and that makes for a looong day.  This was also a very interesting battle for me.  Remember in my Battle Report against Daemons how I was anguished about never having played them before?  Well, that's also true for this next battlle, because I'm up against...

Adepticon 2013 - 40k Team armies pictures pt 1

Adepticon Coverage continues. Right away I want to let you know this is a long post of picture madness, so long that I had to split the thing into two articles because I took so many pictures. You guys said take pictures and by Damn I did. Possibly because you guys asked, possibly because there was that much cool stuff, or could be because I am Asian. >_< ...

Day 2 I spent playing in the 40k Team Event but before playing I walked the floor to take in the sites. If you have never seen a Adepticon Team event you are missing out. More people come to show off, and dress up or go for theme than to actually smash face. Normally a really fun event. Let's take a look at some of the awesome armies and display boards.

Adepticon 2013 - Crystal Brush Winners

Adepticon has come and gone in a blaze of nerd and paint filled fire!! The event is a massive Hobby explosion of events, classes, and vendors. This year STC was on site, as Lantz "THE MAN" was on site taking classes and absorbing knowledge to pass on. I was onsite taking in the events, playing games, and just in general being silly and having a great time. I took a massive amount of pictures, from my trip, and the team event day one. However let's jump into our Adepticon Coverage with the Crystal Brush Winners.

The Road to CAG-BASH: Part 5

...Bugs on the windshield, and I'm all out of Windex

I’m up 1-0 in the tournament after winning my first game.  And I’m feeling pretty good about it.  However, as soon as the second round pairings went up, my stomach dropped.

Tyranids.

I hate Tyranids.  I couldn’t tell you what it is about them, but I always perform poorly against bugs.  I think they get a bad rap on the interwebz.  Tyranids are a tough army, and they have a lot of tricks in 6th edition that can push them to be top contenders.  The sheer number of Monstrous Creatures they are able to field can be overwhelming.

However, I have one thing going for me this game that I think will tip things in my favor…

The Road to CAG-BASH: Part 4

...Making good time

So here we are.  CAG-Bash.  The Big Dance.  Varsity League.  My first large tournament!  CAG-Bash is a relatively large and growing event that occurs annually in Southwest Ohio (if you live in the area, check it out!) and draws people from Lexington to Dayton.  It's not as big as any of the National tournaments each year, like Adepticon, or the Bay Area Open, but at least to this first timer, it seemed pretty big.  The tournament had 34 participants this year, which seems like a good number.  And it grows every year!  I'm fortunate enough that I live in an area where 40k is very popular.  I can walk in to my local store almost any day of the week and find someone playing.  On Saturdays, the store is usually packed, which is great.

But this was not my local game store on a Saturday.  This was serious business!

Tablescapes and Adepticon 2013

First off Tablescapes are awesome

I was going to do a nice write up but Citizensmith already did a great post with some Q and A with Mr Justin about the product and the direction he is going. If you don't know what this is then head over to Kickstarter and take a look.

It's a fantastic option for people to have play tables at home that they can put away in a box easily I think plus the options for display boards is really cool.

STC article on the subject can be found here with some nice Q and A

Now as of Thursday Adepticon 2013 is going on. I'll be arriving on Friday sometime, and fellow STC member Lantz will also be making the rounds through out the event.

Grey Knight - Crusaders

First off as most of you have figured out the STC isn't going anyplace. The post about our demise was a April Fools joke, that honestly came across more serious and got more attention than we expected or intended. I do want to say thank you to all the followers, readers, and people in general who contacted us through various means to support us, and ask for more information. We don't plan on going anyplace and a letter from a lawyer wouldn't change that lol. BOLS did not send us any letter telling us to pack it up, and was in no way involved or notified about our post. (No bad intentions toward the BOLS crew with the post)

Now having said that let's jump back into other things. I continue to work on my Grey Knight forces and still am having fun doing so at this point. So far we have.

The Road to CAG-BASH: Part 3

...Hitting some turbulence

Today's update (yes, a day late, I know.  Better than 2 days late, I'm slowly getting better.) takes us to the second (and last) Primer tournament before the big showdown at CAG-Bash.  Once again, I'm only going to report on the last of the three battles I had that day.  The first two games went quickly, and I ended up tabling (or almost tabling) both of my opponents.  They were good games though.  The final game proved to be a very challenging matchup: Necron versus Necron!  May the best robot win!
