Year of our Lord 2012 - Drkmorals

2012 has been a crash course of a year for me filled with its share of ups and downs. Glory and disappointments (I am looking at you Expendables 2) However like every year it was busy and crazy which is how life is. I would encourage all of you to do a little year in review of your hobby and even overall. It's always a great chance to compare against previous years, see if your hobby lived up to your projected goals and plans, see if your painting improved or your game play, or even stop to see if you are still getting together with good friends on a regular basis to throw dice and unwind.  So let's take a  short walk through the sands of the year of our Lord 2012 for Myself as we do a year in review here at the Standard Template Construct.

DFG shout out, and some List thoughts

This week my evil lair was swarmed by Nurgle as my spawn fell ill one after the other. It was like the virus amused itself by jumping from one child to the next and refusing to die, making life a just a tad more hectic than normal. At least the kids are learning to share right? Then after they finished playing with the Virus and decided that wasn't a great idea in the long run, much a like a puppy, they gave it to mom.. Which is funny because it's true and I am sure a handful of you can relate. . So my schedule is all messed up this week as I flex. Seems like the holidays or something always jumps in the way of the hobby time doesn't it? lol..

Flyers in 6th pt 3 -Strategy of Durability

I have already been contacted and told at least a few of you are really enjoying this series so far. It's always nice to get some positive feedback. The series if you are just catching on has been a brain dump of sorts. More of thinking out loud in general about flyers to give everyone a baseline and some talking points about the new dynamic in 6th edition. I have been generally keep the articles quick light reading nothing to in depth or too lengthy. If you missed the other two so far I'll wait here while you catch up.

Flyers in 6th pt 2 - Quick summary of planes

Ok we gave a short introduction last time about flyers, let's go over the most common seen flyers really quick so you have an idea what to expect if you aren't already running into several of these across the table from you. Just a quick run down of the units that we see most often.

Newly up released items from Games Work shop are up on advanced order and one of them is a expansion called Crusade of Fire, as well as the fortifications we have seen bouncing around the news sites, and rumor mill. Let's take a quick look.

Flyers in 6th pt 1 - A introduction

If you have played a dozen or more games at this point of 6th edition you know that Flyers are a new dynamic that has to be considered both on the battle field and when list building. The flyer has really changed up the game in terms of balance and mobility. Let's talk a moment about this concept.

Adepticon 2013

As we get back into a regular couple of posts a week let's kick things off with a Adepticon post. Adepticon is basically the Super Bowl for this hobby. I would think its safe to say that the event is basically the level other large GT's had been shooting toward when they formed. A several day convention surrounded by other like minded gamer type people. If you have never been than you are missing out. The event has tournaments for all kinds of game systems depending on what your flavor is. The event has classes for all aspects of the hobby, not to mention a vendor hall with lot's of big names from the hobby scene on site. To also include Black Library, third party bitz makers, several miniature companies, and carry case companies. The weekend also has demo's and free swag, as well as special deals going on the entire time. The evening are usually filled with throwing back some tasty beverages with friends both old and new. With trips to the Strip club, and twisted kilt thrown in for good measure.

GK DreadNaught Complete

Only in the darkest of times are the Dreadnaughts of the Grey Knights chapter awoken by the Master Armourers. Silently they slumber in the Chapter's chamber of hero's until they are called upon to serve once more upon a battle field so far from salvation that the wisdom, experience, and undying will are needed once more. The Dreadnaught is a wealth of combat experience and is easily able to adapt to any needed battle field role from long range support, to spearheading assaults, and it not uncommon for a Dreadnaught of the Grey Knight order to assume command of detachments allowing the Brother Captain to focus his attention else where.

Read up, To keep up. (Contest stuff)

Devil's Night is now behind us, and the Holidays are fast approaching. So much madness surrounds our journey as we get closer to rapping up 2012. I have let this blog take a back seat while I worked projects but I actually have several things I want to start talking about here.

First off we just finished up the 12 days of chaos, a quick first impression and review of the new Chaos codex over at the Standard Template Construct. If you haven't checked it out I recommend doing so. We have gotten great feedback from several people about the series.

To wrap up the 12 day long series we are also hosting a contest allowing people to win a couple 50 dollar secret weapon Miniatures gift certs. The contest details can be found here

On the same note The Chaos Manifesto is running a Contest giving away prizes for new followers which you can check out here

Also on things that should be on your radar the Indy Open for March of next year is already selling tickets. The event caps out at 64 I believe so tickets tend to go fast. If you are in the area I would check it out it's a newer GT and the people I know that went last year all spoke highly of the event. I plan on attending in fact I already purchased my ticket. Link action here for more details

Also fastly approaching is the Nov 12th date that Adepticon 2013 sales will begin. All events at adepticon sell out extremely fast. Last year I think the championship was sold out in days and by 2 weeks there was slim pickings for any events over all. If you area planning to go or throw down at the team event you may want to talk about it with your boys sooner than later to do some planning. I sadly won't be able to go this year. I was there the last two years and it's one of my favorite events.

Finally Expect more 6th edition content here. I am not going to lie 6th is a strange beast to me. It is much different than 5th even though it appears to not be too far off at first glance. The reality is the first time your 5th edition list runs into a true 6th edition list, the lesson will be painful. I have been play testing all kinds of random builds and experimenting to try and get a bit of a grasp on what I like and don't like as a player. Honestly though while I am finding builds that work, I am finding that I haven't found to many builds I enjoy playing in the new edition just yet. Allies has really changed the game, and several units are just vastly different from what they where before. If you run Razor Spam for example, the first time you run into a flyer heavy list it's almost a auto loss.

I'll be talking a bit about 6th edition in a little more detail over the next few weeks as I continue to test out concepts and list builds and as always you are welcome along the journey. I will start talking about flyers and how they have changed the game when it comes to the concept of balanced army. (if there still is such a thing)

That's all for now..

Chaos Codex Review Day One

As you are all aware the evil has been reborn with new shiny, new sickly, and new reasons to get blood for the blood god. The Chaos Codex is floating about out there among you, and is being whispered about all around you. A couple of the members of the Construct have formed together to bring you a review with some quick thoughts. Over the next 12 days you will be able to stop by and get POV's on the initial thoughts on all the units in the book by more than one source, as the 12 days of chaos unfold before you with thoughts and idea's of a evil nature.

All are welcome so feel free to enlist your buddies to stop by the church of evil playing out for the next few weeks. We always welcome thoughts, comments, or feedback of any kind. If you feel the need to lurk in the shadows silently gathering your numbers and awaiting the right time to strike. We highly encourage that as well. I'll drop links to the content here as well as we take this journey.

So please join us  for Twelve Days of Chaos

Horus Heresy Book I; Betrayal...a Curmudgeon's review.

Okay, to start I have become jaded.  Maybe I've been playing with my toy soldiers too long, maybe I'm too old or maybe a year of infant/toddler induced sleep deprivation has brought an even greater level of curmudgeon-itude to the fore, but this last year has brought me only a little GW joy.

I keep looking for that next 'thing' to bring me back into the fold, bring me a new joy in the sandbox I like to play.
I have become pessimistic in my assessments, more negative than ever in my 'anticipation' of releases and utterly unforgiving in my final analysis'.

I think no more.  It may just have taken Forge World to fix what ails me!

Cool Mini or Not 12.40

I've been busy with several side projects and have been letting my personal site here slip a bit, but there should be a uptick in posting coming along so bear with me as I am finishing up models, and getting a handle on 6th. Also there will be some STC action concerning Chaos coming up with the new codex dropping so stay tuned for that as well.

Digital White Dwarf Review

So as the ever expanding overlord known as the mighty GW it continues to expand its empire across the vastness of our world it appears to be also expanding its hold and abilities into the Digital market. I say expand but I personally feel like only for the first time are they really paying this market any real attention lately. So I will be starting a series looking at what the digital products offer us, and I hope to give you more than the random ranting or complaining about price or what not that you get around the intertubes.

We will start these off with the new White Dwarf going digital,

Cataphractii Pattern Terminators and Weapon Sets

I haven't been posting the FW releases because I have been busy, and because I haven't been super excited about them, but these Terminators are awesome I think. Let's take a look

Please keep in mind these are pre release models I believe they will be at Games Day but only in limited number.

40k FAQ quick Overview pt 3

So we have part three of our quick series. The first part was the generic rulebook, and then we went into half the codex's. Let's go ahead and finish up the other half of the books.

Malleus Inquisitor complete

The order of the hammer is the exact translation of this order from high gothic, but often times they are also called demon hunters. The Ordo Malleus is considered one of the oldest and most ancient arms of the Inquisition that was created by the decree of the Emperor prior to his internment and ascension to the Golden Throne of Terra.

I set out to find a use for this great model like I said in the past and what I ended up with was a great flex model on the table top. I have used this as a INQ, as another Terminator, and even as a Grand Master. It is always nice to have flexible models in your collection depending on what type of list you are running.

40k FAQ quick Overview pt 2

So I threw up a some of the FAQ changes with some quick and dirty thoughts and notes on the main rule book, (other post found here) but I would like to talk about a few of the Codex specific things as well. It never hurts to know your enemy and having a grasp on how some rules work may be the difference between holding a objective or not. In other times it may be the difference between an opponent crushing you because he is playing the game wrong either on purpose or by honest mistake. The updating of all of the FAQ's at once though means that I learned quickly that I would have to split this into two posts or it would be amazingly long. Anyway let's get into the rules changes so I perhaps we can talk about general tactics about our new edition.

40K FAQ quick overview

I was asked if I was going to do a post about the new updates that have finally come out for 6th. I was told I was getting all "hobby" on people since I haven't been doing tactics posts and strategy but more painting and modelling stuff. Which is true. I want to say that either type of post is fine in my eyes as it is all apart of the same hobby and I strive to explore and be better at the hobby over all and not just in one area. I also have specifically been holding my tongue while I test out concepts in 6th, to see what we learned from Nova, and for GW to release FAQ's. All of these things now have happened so expect a little bit more posting of tactics and what not from this point on.. There is much data, concepts, and discussion I would like to touch on. However first off I want to start off with the 40k FAQ's.

So let's discuss a few things in the main FAQ first and just jump right into this.

Death Cult Assassins

The Death Cult Assassin is what the Emperor would call a necessary evil. Walking the boarder line of heretic with obsession. The highly trained girls are not what you would want to run into while strolling through a dark alley. What do we know about the Death Cult though? If we refer directly to GW's website we are greeted with the comment "undefined" LINK Clearly one of the more secretive groups if even the game's creator is unable to provide public information.. However the Codex tells us the background.

Updates from my workbench: Ep 2 - Wiring upgrade

Currently I have been slaving away in my lab on my GK army. I already pressed out molds for all the vehicles and have done work on the dreads. However I am waiting for some bitz to redo part of the dreads because I was unhappy with sections of the model and think they could look better, in the meantime I had two perfect excuses to do some other modifications I had been thinking about for some time... Join me in the lab for a quick peek, but don't feed anything or let anything out of its cage... I don't care what it says..

New Chaos Models!! Leak of starter set.

It's Friday which by itself is an excuse to drink and party with the ladies. However these awesome new pictures are already making the rounds online only to further cement in that the rumors of releases are looking spot on.. Chaos is looming, and I don't mean that your children are playing with playdoe while drinking kool aide in the living room on your new White carpet.. I mean we appear to actually be getting a Codex for them after what seems like forever..Let's take a look at the leak...

When do you upgrade?

As I tinker, build, and madly create in the lab. All to further the never ending war that is warhammer 40k. Through experimentation and the loss of many lives in the name of SCIENCE I have made several great discovery’s over the last few years.. or what I am trying to say is apparently practice makes you better at modeling and painting. Who would have thought?

So as I have reached this cross roads in my hobby life, I wonder what is the normal response of what to do with my stuff? I figure I have a few options…

Inquisitor Torquemada Coteaz

All forces need a leader, a warlord, or a warmaster. It was to Coteaz fluff that I was initially drawn when I read the GK codex and decided that as I started my first imperial army I would start with a Coteaz force. Who better to lead the marines that tend to kill off those they ally with to keep secrets than someone else just as driven to get results..   The ends justify the means can be heard under the breath of several of those under the Inquisitors command, but more often you will here that it is better to die than to have to admit failure in a task to Lord Coteaz.

GK Strike Squad

Though I have been using the GK codex for some time now my main focus has been learning to play the army more than anything else. Testing out units and lists trying to hammer out what style of army I want to play in the long run. I did do a design/scheme with several mods and such. (incomplete pictures have been posted on various models as I tinker on my blog in the past) However I honestly got the army to table top quality for Adepticon and now is my first chance to actually go back and do the army justice. What follows is the first complete unit in the army a 10 man Strike Squad.

Nova FAQ - THE BAR is drafted

I wrote a small rant (thinking out loud really) about the NOVA setting the bar for rules going forward. I have been waiting for the FAQ to be released to see how they rule on several things because as I pointed out before even if it isn't the long running standard. What Nova does will set the tone for the average until something clearly needs to be changed. So again expect rules arguments to end with... "But Nova ruled this way" lol They actually have a blurb that specifically states it is not intended for use in this way and is solely intended to be used for the NOVA event. However I know that locally it will most likely be used as a starting point for local FAQ's

Nova is a well run event that garners and DESERVES much respect for the work put into it. This is why its ruling carry so much weight in my opinion.

Mike has released a draft version of the FAQ in the spirit of giving people as much time as possible to get ready for his event. Something I applaud.

So let's look at a few things..

A Farewell to 5th

<Re-post from STC where I guest write, all guest articles will always be reposted here with a delay from other sites so you don't have to jump around to follow my content. Also to keep a record of things I wrote>

As we sift through the new rule book pondering, weak and weary, over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore. Trying to grasp the intricacies of the new rule book like a teenage boy studying a super model poster, Lest we forget while looking at the new Shit, the long hard road that got us here.

We all travelled the lonely road of 5th but it’s the only one we knew, but at the end of what any Nid players will call a boulevard of broken dreams we have a new edition. But like many of you out there I was unable to jump head first into the new rules right away because I still had one final event using the dusty tomes of old.

Each of us have a story about our last game or games of 5th edition, this is mine. You think you know… but you have no idea.

Who the $%&# is Drkmorals?

<Re-post from STC where I guest write, all guest articles will always be reposted here with a delay from other sites so you don't have to jump around to follow my content. Also to keep a record of things I wrote>

Greetings fellow Xenos and Inquisitors, hobbyist and competitive gamer's, Strippers and Frat boys.. (What ? Strippers might be reading this they are people too)

My name is Charles AKA Drkmorals My stomping grounds are currently Dayton Ohio or as I like to call it the land of corn and never ending road construction. I started really tinkering with this gateway drug that GW calls a game around the end of 4th edition. The edition if I remember right in which every vehicle was a flaming metal box of doom for the people riding inside. I started getting more serious about the game and more involved though about 3 years back and will admit I have been for the most part more of a competitive gamer than a hobbyist.. Don't judge me we all start someplace right?

Will NOVA set the BAR?

As we head into our new edition there has been cries of the sky falling as people argue over allies, 2 FOC’s, fortifications, and the random objectives/terrain. People are picking a side and standing firm on what you should be allowed and not allowed to take in an event of various types.

Nova is one of the first large established GT’s to go into 6th edition so they had to make some calls that may or may not last the test of time. I understand that they have time constraint so they had to make choices if for nothing else to have a standard. However Nova is one of those events that will sway other events going forward. So I have been waiting to see what exactly they decided.

Some notes

Standard Template Construct….

Despite reports I yet live…..

Haven’t had near the hobby or blog time I would like. I have been super busy with all kinds of things including real life and side projects. (Who knew that having a third child would eat up so much time? Baby technology hasn’t advanced much you still have to feed and help the little things do everything? )

Starting to work on a new project which I hope will be great for the community; we have a group of talented guys getting together and heading up a new blog to focus on doing some cool positive and inspiring stuff for the community. I encourage you guys to head over and check it out, keep an eye on it, and even “follow” the site as it grows.

6e and 5e comparisons: Assault

DFK! again:

So I undertook a venture to compare shooting and assault mechanics between two squads in 5e and 6e rules.  My friend Kaffis and I sat down to compare his sisters and a squad of jump pack templars with a Chaplain HQ.  No, the comparison is not point balanced.  It isn't meant to be.  The point is just to see what the results look like.  We messed up a couple things along the way just from getting our rules crossed, but check out the play-by-play below.  I'll tell you when I messed something up.

Here's the two WYSIWYG sample groups: 5 Templar jump marines on left, 2x plasma pistols, a storm shield, a power fist, and a Chaplain

On the right, some battle sisters, with rhino, 10 sisters, one vet, a melta and a heavy flamer
