Geek Chic - A spotlight and some sale notes.

Geek Chic if you have never heard of them is company that basically makes furniture for gamer's. No I don't mean that shabby stuff you can buy at your local Warmart built in some Chinese factory where if you leave a bolt out while self putting it together with non English instructions hoping the pictures make sense it wobbles for the rest of its life, or I don't mean the crazy compact yet oddly affordable treasure you find while going through the Dungeon that is a IKEA store.

I mean they make old school classy fancy furniture. The type of furniture that looks like the guy on the monopoly box owns it except it has all been done in a custom twist for gaming. Also just like the other things the Monopoly guy owns rest assured that several of us, (and I say US because I am including myself) can't afford several of these items. This is fancy stuff but if you have never seen any of it. It is well worth a look and drool in typical Forgewold type fashion.

Let's take a look at some examples taken from the Site. All rights to them of course.

Video- Happy Holidays short

Real Life is shockingly busy for most of us around the holiday season, as we juggle family, friends, and hobby time. A short video with a little new meets old (in several ways).

Feel free to share or link if you think its cute. =P Don't give my daughter a larger head than she already has though I mean all MEDIA already tells her she is a princess. >_<

I'll also go ahead and get a head start on the Holiday wishes that will be flooding around the Inter-Tubes in another day or so. Let me be the first to wish you all a Happy Holidays from everyone here at

Video - Space Marines vs Grey Knights test game 2

Second report from my day of GK testing. Same board and same list as before only I threw down with some SM's that our buddy Drew brought along. Quick video to share with you guys enjoy.

Ill follow up with my thoughts on the list, and how the GK's work.

KrystalKeep Combat Patrol, and a fond farewell....

So,
this weekend marked the final yearly 'Combat Patrol' tournament at the KrystalKeep.
As usual, Jim Williams ran a fast, furious and funtastic event full of much cursing, screaming and gnashing of tzeentch (and smiles).
Many a brave soldier(xenos, infidel, traitor)died yesterday, only to rise again shortly thereafter to wage the war eternal in the 40k 'oonivers'.
Final standings showed how strong, balanced and fair players and scenarios were, with a 4 way split for 1st!
Edge T
John W
Stephen (?)
Nick S.

I had a blast, as is usual for Jim's events (and events that have been run for years up at the Keep).
But alas, this marks an end.

December 30th, the store will be closing for the last time.

Rick, Raj and the others who have contributed to the store, with their heart and souls, have finally had enough.
The economy, coupled with other major, and minor, factors beyond their control have taken their toll.
KrystalKeep has kept its doors open throughout the most trying of economic times, worse than any I have seen personally.

I moved to Ohio 3 years ago.  I greatly feared the loss of my hobby and friends due to a new environment.
I should never have feared.
I discovered the Keep, and moved in...and quickly realized I had found a new 'home' in more ways than one.
The staff became friends, the players became friends, and within 6 months I not only felt as though I had regained the 'old' guard, but had gained an even better crowd!
I fell in love with the community all over again.
I wanted to share that particular anecdote, not to make the changes coming about me...but to emphasize the impact the Keep has had on a great deal of people.

A club, a forum, an arena AND a place where 'everybody knows your name'.
EVERYONE I know, who frequented the place (and there were many in my 3 years of attendance) saw KrystalKeep as a 'home away from home'.  A place to leave behind the trials and tribulations of life, sit down with a mental 'pint', and just be.
I have known few places with this sense of family attached to such a business, and doubt I will know many more.

I know I'm going to miss all the weekends, all the events and all the 'BS' sessions over our little 'toy soldiers'.
All these things that were made so much more satisfying due to the environment within which they were set.

I want to wish the guys who ran our little home all the best luck in their future endeavors, thank them from the bottom of my heart for providing all the joy they did.
I wish to thank all the players who accepted me from the git-go, and all the heart they put into their play, and their friendships.
And I wish to thank all those who sacrificed their personal time, effort and heart to run the events that kept us all in the loop!

a hearty salute to the end of an era, and now....

Video - Grey Knights VS Necrons Test game

So while life is keeping me stupid busy I did get a chance to get together with Mike and play a test game with my incomplete GK's I am building. I took all the models I have gotten cleaned up and glued together, (plus two borrowed rhino's from Mike) Mike wanted to test out armor 13 type spam list with some ghost arks, and to see if you could run Necrons without Scarabs. He also video recorded the test game, oh and he was being dad to his new daughter the whole time and she was not happy. =P As a father myself I didn't mind but it's funny. So you will hear baby during the video in several parts and sometimes she is happier than others. Viewer discretion advised if that sort of thing bothers you.

Just a quick test game between friends. Mike complains about GK's but he's joking he actually owns and plays GK's on a regular basis. =P I have to get used to the new style of play and I have some tweaks to make of course as I see what I like and don't. I was able to get one more game in with Drew that Mike recorded I'll see about getting that spliced together to throw up here as well.

Any comments or Questions are welcome. Pictures of my stuff is also incoming as I finish it and get ready to primer. Possibly pictures of the Necron's as Mike gets them together as well.

Sabotage of the 40k gamer...marketing rant

Okay, so I have this shiny new codex...one I've awaited for quite a while.
It is a simple little book, with undead robots, flying saucers and such.

It is a book that has been introduced during the reign of the 1+1 paradigm (unit+transport), the year of the (pseudo)flyer and the edition-of-mech...

and something is distinctly lacking...

quick GK progress, and blogroll info.

So I have been grinding away at building GK models the last week and half. I was told about a tourney this Saturday and the goal was to have enough built, and primed in time to take the army for a test spin. I have been doing pretty good I had already built Coteaz and his ladies and this week or so I have thrown together and added my mods to

2 Dreads
1 Ven dread
1 LR redeemer
12 henchmen
4 of 6 Razors

Really I am in the home stretch of getting the last of the Razors done and the weapons all good with the Green Stuff emblems and such on them. I am planning to borrow some units to get my army up to 1850. So it won't be what I would typically run but it will still be some practice with a codex I haven't played before.

I however still need a Libby and I went to two of the three stores in my area already and no dice. They don't have the dumb libby because FINECAST makes getting one horrible and slow. Finecast you are messing with my mojo man!!! WTF .. I might have to borrow that too, we shall see.

Anyway just a quick update on what I am doing game wise and a complaint about finecast. (like there aren't enough of those around.) If I finish before Friday night I will take some pictures of the stuff before and after Primer to throw up on the blog. If not I will have pictures of my games at the very least to share with you guys.

ALSO before I run off and get glue on my fingers again. I will be updating a few things on the site this weekend. So if I am on your blog roll but your not on mine leave a comment, or if you want to do a blog roll exchange let me know. I try to link to everyone that links to me even if you don't contact me but its hard to track that.

Inspire - Daemonette

This time around we have Last years Golden Demon U.K. 2011 - Category 1 : Warhammer 40,000 Single Miniature. The artist is Angelo di Chello who tends to really go over board on doing fantastic banners if you have seen any of his other work.

Some Fantastic work when you consider the size of the model. The painting is amazing and even the base looks great and adds to the over all feel of it.

Loss of the FLGS Krystal Keep

The economy has been tough on many people  and I can say that everyone one I know has had the last year or so affect someone they know personally. Things are rough at the moment for several people and while several of us are making due and getting by there are others who are on the streak of tough luck. Today’s post is about the loss of my FLGS. When I don’t play at a buddy’s house this store is where I played my casual pickup games. Great space, great terrain, and really they tried to create a place for the miniature and historical miniature community more so than any store I have personally seen since I have been in the hobby. I am a event person because of how my life and schedule work out so I enjoy a day of gaming at a tourney. So at least half of my gaming is at events and all my casual gaming was broken up between my FLGS and my buddy’s houses.  I just cleared my schedule to be able to go to the combat patrol event happening next month and I had some time this evening so I headed down to pick up a few things I needed and I found the lights off and this message taped to the glass.

I, Necron...

A wee bit ago (as in 6 weeks) I was accosted by a new addition to my household.
She (the squirming ball of stink that is my daughter) has infringed on all things 'hobby' and 'sleep', putting me off my feed...thus delaying this, my first writing for Darkmorals. So introductions;
Hi, my name's Mike and I have a problem, plastic-crack(or resin, or metal, but mostly plastic).
For as long as he'll tolerate my inane ramblings and self aggrandizing rants about the hobby we love, I will write guest abominati...articles for the Emperor's Codex!

So, now that the unnecessary is finished, to the meat! (note that this meat is for the masses who have the codex. as I don't have the inclination to write a unit by unit/rule by rule review...it'll be done to death elsewhere...I'm writing this from a sense of changes in the wind for the Necrons, and hopefully the overall environment. it's a review of direction and expectations, not rules/mechanics.)

NECRONS
The codex started as a little White Dwarf raider list (back when WD produced interesting stuff, and didn't cost you a car-payment to keep up with), grew into a list that truly frightened people for a bit and finally slid into ignominy as Imperial after Imperial Codex drove them under, with the help of 5th edition.
Enter the now.

The new 'dex has given us a few things, amongst them a new 'paradigm' of play.
-a base statline that is unique in the current 40k environ (some orkish stats, some marine stats, and the ability to resurrect regardless of the punishment meted out), AV 13 transport spam, and environmental manipulations out the Wazoo.
-the slow and steady advance of an implacable foe, under the umbrella of almost 'mystical' technologies that defy logic (in a fluff sense) and sidestep many simple/reflexive countermeasures.
-an entirely new 'universe' of ideas to work into the ever(if slow) changing 40k universe.

Necron's Complaints already?

In the Grim dark future there is no Maytag Repair man, because the robots repair themselves.  Yes that’s right unless you live under a rock (like a caveman) you know that the Necron codex dropped and the undead pet project of the Ctan have gotten an update. I don’t mean some shabby windows update that makes you restart your computer two times when you clearly don’t want to right now. I mean a real manly update that would make Tim Allen proud.  You get all kinds of new shiny for your Metallo inspired army.  What is better than metal hungry soul less killing robot zombies? Well fluffy robot zombies of course! Wait, no I don’t mean like that unicorn in Despicable Me, although feel free to model your new army as fluffy bunny crons if that amuses you.

Adepticon 2012

Last year was my first year attending Adepticon which for anyone that does the GT scene it is the Wrestlemania or Superbowl of the scene. There are several other events but nothing is exactly like Adepticon it was a good time and a blast with several days of fun and meeting like minded gamer's.

Next Year's event Adepticon 2012 started ticket sales on Monday however something I thought was amazing or impressive or possibly just insane. Within 24 hours the 40k Single's event, the 40k Team event, at least one 40k combat patrol, the 40k friendly event, and something close to 2 dozen workshops/ painting classes sold out. Yep that's right tourney events 170 days away sold out already.

If your reading this and you had planned on attending I hope you got a golden ticket so to speak or are trying to get on the waiting list already. I happen to randomly login to look around at what was going on this year and when Is saw tickets already selling quickly I was able to grab one. So if your going to be there I'll see you there. The fact it was selling out so quickly seemed like it was news worthy of a blog post.

If you haven't looked already the events are on the cart page with how many tickets for each one are left. Head over and take a look and if you are interested in anything left I wouldn't wait too long.

Flak Cannon/Auto Cannon Dread arms

So in my quest to put together Grey Knights like several other power armor players I needed options to make my psyfleman dreadnoughts. There are a ton of options and conversion and ways you can go about this process. You can even break down and get some arms from Forgeworld if you would like to go that way. After looking at what my friends have done and what options are online I ended up with an option I originally found on our good buddy Warflake's blog. He says he found them on Dakka. I read Dakka but only the bat reps section I don't normally run around any place else not that its a bad site I just don't read forums much. (in fact that is why I post my bat reps on that forum since I read them there I feel obligated to share the one's I write. lol )

The Front Lines 10-30

The weekend has rushed by us or shambled by for some of us. I wasn’t feeling a 100 percent this weekend so I personally spent a large chunk of Saturday watching all of season one of The Walking Dead from AMC. Great show if you haven’t seen it and like zombies. It has good acting and actual story which is amazing for a zombie flick. But enough of the shambling undead horde of zombie’s its time for a round up of things and….some more from the shambling undead robots as they are still the next new thing let’s start off with them.

Cool Mini or Not 11.44

It's the tail end of the weekend but that also means that Cool Mini or Not newsletter is out and about with some great restocked and new items as always. Let's take a look at our weekly eye candy below before Monday creeps up on us.

Xenos armies and you

Let's be honest we can all most likely agree that GW has a love affair with power armor. Unless it has girls in it of course then for some reason then they get a halfhearted attempt at a update and rules..Let's review

Bald screaming man of various ages = who wants some more war gear?
Girl in armor not bald and screaming = is there a kitchen in the dark grim future to stick them in?.. No hmmm, perhaps a WD update while we figure out what to do.

Necron, 6th Edition

Times are changing or perhaps they are going back to the way things had been? I won't bore you with I had to walk up hill both ways to school in the snow stories that normally come along with the phrase times are changing but I am referring to rumors. For awhile rumors, news, and talk about things to come spewed forward on the blog sphere and intertubes like a bubbling brew after a gun blast to the earth. Texas T if you will. Really what I am saying is I used to do a nice weekly run down of thing happening news wise and then GW like the over bearing parent knee jerking to the fact they left town and we threw a slightly out of hand party put the smack down sealing the news. Putting a stop to leaks and rumors.. or so we thought.. It appears as the Necron's have shown us that we only had been grounded for a short time because it almost appears that everything is back in order like before. So as long as we are getting interesting news might as well do a run down like before.

ML CON 750- 1750 RTT

This last weekend our gaming club had a small in house RTT for members. Potluck, bbq, beer, some bitz swapping and a tourney. Not a bad day gaming wise. This is my first club event since I joined up and I will say that over all it was a good time.. Although it was a long long day lol.

Coteaz and his ladies

Necrons are everywhere at the moment and I honestly have a ton of comments and things I will share with the cool pictures that I am sure you have all seen at this point. I sadly don't have the time, with Real life being in the way tonight and with a club tourney in the morning I won't have time to type up my comments, bad jokes, and metaphors until later.. sigh...

In the meantime I have some pictures since I got another squad or actually, two and a start of a third squad complete.
Some pictures real fast.

1000 Points Space Wolves Vs Orks

Lazy Sunday tourney Game 3

So after my epic game Vs Sandman that ended in us stopping each other from going 3-0 for the day. I ended up facing a Space wolf player. He is a newer player but he was a cool guy and excited to play.

1000 points Grey Knights VS Orks

Lazy Sunday Battle report Game Two

After pulling out a Victory vs IG I was paired up against Sandman’s GK’s. I laugh because I drove all the way to Cinci to play a game against Sandman who I could have played locally. We make a few jokes and then we are off.

1000 points IG Vs ORKS

Lazy Sunday 1000 Point Tourney

Had a chance to get out and about this weekend with some of my local club mates.
This last Sunday I was invited to show up and hang out with fellow club members Sandman and Warmonger for the YottaQuest Lazy Sunday event. I had a pretty hectic week but I didn’t actually have any plans Sunday so this worked out perfect.

GK's a list finally

So first off I want to point out that there appears to be a faction of people that are angry when you start a new army? Not exactly sure why? When I decided I would start another army and picked GK's I had several people I talk to get all angry face on me? So I gotta ask what's with the hate? I had people give me crap for starting a power gaming army? Telling me that I shouldn't make the jump... these are IG and SW players mind you so I really don't see how even if that was my goal that they have any room to talk. LOL people are funny. =P

Gk some initial progress

So I took the time to do a rough up of the first Razorback of many. Since I am planning to run Coteaz I will of course need several of these things, but I normally like to do a test model to get a idea of what I am doing and how hard/easy it will be to do several of them. I decided I wanted to add some iconography instead of having to hand paint them on so this is what I have so far.

Cool Mini or Not 11.39

Hopefully everyone is having a great weekend so far. =) Let's take a look a the updates from Cool Mini or Not. As always there is some great stuff back on the shelf and if you need more information please head over to the cool mini or not website.
